Mark Zuckerberg On God

by Eric Burgess

The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, has given himself quite a personal challenge for 2017: “My personal challenge for 2017 is to have visited and met people in every state in the US by the end of the year.”

In January he paid a lengthy visit to the state of Texas. During one afternoon in Waxahachie, he had lunch with several community leaders to discuss the pride they had in their state, along with their feelings of the divisive state of our country right now (his words). It was his mention of the ministers he met in Waco, though, that piqued my interest:

“I met with ministers in Waco who are helping their congregations find deeper meaning in a changing world.”

It should be noted that Zuckerberg, who was raised in a Jewish home, does not lean to any one religion. He posted on his Facebook page last Christmas that he isn’t an atheist, and that he believes “religion is very important.”

There are a lot of other great nuggets to quote from this post on his trip to Texas, like this one: “…this trip has helped me understand just how important community is, and how we’re all just looking for something we can trust.” It’s great to see him connect the spiritual “dots” to the importance of community.

Lastly, I found this quote the most profound:

“We may come from different backgrounds, but we all want to find purpose and authenticity in something bigger than ourselves.”

Could that “something bigger than ourselves” mean God? Something to think about.

Keep up with Zuckerberg’s “Year of Travel.”
