How to File Form 990N (e-Postcard) With the IRS

A Note From Aplos

Due to a delay with IRS updates to Aplos, we are unable to provide 990 e-filing within the software at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience.

You can access historical filings and data for previous 990s filed through Aplos. Filings that failed or were rejected cannot be accessed. Your organization’s fiscal year may differ from the calendar year, so be sure to double-check before submitting your Form 990. For questions, go to the IRS website or call the IRS at 877-829-5500.

Form 990-N: You can electronically file Form 990-N directly through the IRS website.

Form 990-EZ: Local CPA firms may be able to assist you with electronically filing Form 990-EZ, or you can select an approved e-file provider from the IRS list.

Estimated Time: 15 Minutes

In this video we will show you how to use Aplos to file your annual 990-N tax return with the IRS!

Filing Form 990-N or Form 990-EZ electronically is included in your Aplos subscription at no additional charge.

Who Needs to eFile Form 990-N?

Tax-exempt organizations whose annual gross receipts are normally $50,000 or less must complete the IRS Form 990-N, unless they choose to file a complete Form 990 or Form 990-EZ instead.

Some organizations not required to file a Form 990-N include:

  • Organizations included in a group return
  • Churches, their auxiliaries, conventions, or associations
  • Organizations required to file a different return, such as private foundations

This form is very simple and easy, but also very important. If you don’t file it on time, there is no penalty. But if you fail to file the return for three consecutive times, your organization will automatically lose its tax-exempt status.

990-N Filing Deadline

Put it on your calendar. Form 990-N will be due by the fifteenth of the fifth month after the close of your fiscal year. For example, if your fiscal year ends December 31, your Form 990 is due May 15 of the following year. Your nonprofit’s fiscal year may be different than the calendar year, so double-check before submitting it.

If you missed the deadline and would like to file a Form 990-N for a previous year, we can help.
